If Adam and Eve were the first couple “god” created, did their children have sex with each other to populate the world?
I remember learning about Adam and Eve as a kid. I am sure everyone knows the basic story of creation about how “god” took some clay and created Adam, then used part of Adam to create Eve. I don’t know why he didn’t just create her from scratch. I guess he was trying to recycle or something? Anyway, we were basically told that we all came from Adam and Eve but they didn’t really talk about details of how it worked. It wasn’t until I was older that I actually thought about it…. Does that mean that their kids had to have sex with each other?!!
In short, the answer is YES!
The story of Adam and Eve according to Islam
After Adam and Eve ate from the “forbidden tree” and got banished from heaven, they were sent to earth as a test to “god’s” new creation. The Quran does not mention Eve’s name, but Muslims know her as Hawwa. Eventually, they started having kids together. God decided to give them two sets of twins, each set included a boy and a girl. The boy from the first set was named Cain (Qabil) and boy from the second set was named Able (Habil). Of course, the girls names are not mentioned again… I guess they are just not important. Apparently, “god” ordered the boy from the first set to marry the girl from the second set (because having sex with your sibling is not as bad as having sex with your twin?)… And that’s how it all started… That’s why we are here today…
I had two problems with this story:
- Marrying bothers and sisters is not allowed in Islam (or in any society that has basic common sense!). So that means that this story contradicts the “Islamic law”. Muslims say that this was a one time exception to get the population of the world started, then it was outlawed later in the Quran.
- Why couldn’t “god” just create another couple to have kids too? Or better yet, a whole bunch of families. That way they don’t have to be incestuous and have sex with their siblings. He is all powerful right? He surely knows that there is a major problem with this idea.
Islam and Evolution
Many Muslims believe that the Quran and science are in line with each other. They interpret parts of the Quran to explain scientific ideas like evolution and the big bang. I remember learning about evolution in school, but we were always told that “god” made it happen and that the story of creation in the Quran somehow fits. I don’t know how that made sense, since the idea of humans created from clay just doesn’t work with the basic principles of biology and evolution.
To make matters worse, the story of Adam and Eve makes us all a result of inbreeding! Especially because “god” made Eve from Adam. That would give them similar genes right? So their kids would be 2nd generation inbred. That is a recipe for disaster! Talk about major genetic defects….But I guess “god” knew that.
It’s just sad that people in the 21st century still teach such nonsense. They make up crazy interpretations that would make the Quran seem like it works with modern day science. They would also never admit it when they are wrong. They would rather teach their kids how to be ignorant and follow religious ideas based on blind faith. I refused to do that. I studied the Quran, asked questions, and thought about the answers I was given. It turns out that the best way to lose your faith, is to actually read your “holy book”. Reading the Quran is the main reason why I am an atheist today.

fwiw, some people believe that Adam and Eve, who had souls, were injected into a world with people without souls and that now, everyone has a soul
The bible contains language that implies (Gen 5:4) that Adam and Eve had lots of children. It also contains language (Gen 6:2) that there were others around besides the descendants of Adam and Eve (translating the Hebrew in that sentence depends a lot on how you translate the term ‘elohim’ and there is considerable difference of opinion on that).

personally I consider religion to be something which was created to identify/distinguish good and bad.btw, I didn’t expect a superfast response from you. thanks.
if I may ask, what was the threshold event which made you against islam. mere reading quran would not have been the trigger.

I understand enough about the Abrahamic religions to give my opinion about them. I have read the old and new testaments and I did some research so I have a general idea of what they are about.
I understand that religion was probably first created as a guideline to teach people the good from the bad, but it was man made for ancient times. There a lot of bad teachings mixed in with a little bit of good ones. We have advanced so much as a society over thousands of years and we know much more now than they did back then. We can base our decisions on rational thinking and we do not need religion to tell us how to live.
As for the threshold, it was a combination of things over the years, but mainly because of what is in the Quran. I gave a summary in the page where I talk about “my story” and I talk a little about the different things in each post.

Actually, Genesis 6 suggests that the world was populated by angels, sent down from heaven, and humans.
The old testament can be quite daunting to anyone without deep rooted conviction. There appear to be a lot of unnecessary rules that appear to show God as unsure about what he had created and where it was going. One example is the laws with regard to food and food preparation which were set up as God’s law but today we see were simple hygiene and common sense food preservation. It’s a bit like how you raise a child. As an infant/toddler there are one set of rules and a multitude of restrictions. As they grow the rules change and the restrictions become less and less. This is evident with the differences between the Old Testament and the New Testament.
And off subject here, it is my absolute conviction that there is a God. The God of the Bible and only the Bible. When you read the books of Daniel, Matthew and Revelation you read about what many call “the Anti-Christ” and the end of time. The Bible never does say there is one particular individual called “the Anti-Christ”, it states that it is coming and is already here. Anti-Christ is a state of mind and behavior. Now it does say there will be a false prophet and a Beast. The Beast will demand to be worshiped and will recover from a fatal wound to the head. The false prophet will assist in forcing the entire world to worship the Beast. The Beast, as we all know comes from Satan. But who on this world will be the embodiment of the Beast? One who demands to be worshiped.
Islam demands to be worshiped. Muslims who say there is no compulsion in coming (converting) to Islam can easily be proven wrong. Islam routinely beheads for apostacy or insult to its prohpet. In Revelation 20:4, John saw the souls who had been beheaded for their testimony of Jesus.
Muhammad had only a short handful of years to bring Islam into being. Mathematically speaking, the averages say that his religion should have died with him and his generation (fatal wound to the head). It did not but it also did not have a very strong foothold either. Today we see Islam creeping across the world faster than it ever did.
Muhammad was visited by something but it was not the Arch Angel Gabriel. Satan needs an army. He found it in Islam and with Muhammad.
The Quran directly contradicts the Bible in every way. Mistakes in the Quran are evident to anyone whose eyes are open. The Quran calls Mary (Mother of Jesus) the sister of Aaron. She was not. When that error was caught it was explained away as a “manner of speech” to those from that lineage. It was not a known manner of speech. If it were, they would not have asked for clarification on what appeared to be (and was) an error. The fact is, the god of Muhammad and Islam is not the same God of the Bible and Christianity. Their very differences make that an impossibility. The same God who inspired the Bible could not possibly have commanded the writing of the Quran.
